House Training Older
Dog
House training pups is much easier than it is to house training older dog
or an adult dog, especially when you have adopted it from another owner or the street or the animal welfare
center.
When you have pup house training takes time but you can alter ways of training and set habits
for your pup gradually and your pup will grow into these habits. House training older dog is difficult as the
dog will already have its set habits and you have to make your dog unlearn the wrong habits and teach it new
ones. Some older dogs are well trained however some are stubborn and that makes it difficult house training
older dog.
When you have adopted an older dog make sure you never keep it alone, be constantly around it
to understand its behavior. If it relieves inside the house or in a corner of the room, make sure you have
observed its behavior prior to relieving, does it move in circles or sniffs or escapes quietly into another
room or barks. There are different behavioral patterns that a dog might have, you need to understand these
thoroughly to start house training older dog.
Once you have observed its behavioral pattern, you can train your older dog with the help of
these following tips.
1. When you are ready for house training older dog, make sure you never leave your
dog alone. The first step is to observe your dog keenly and never let it go outside until your dog is fully
trained. Stop it from going to the rooms you feel it might destroy or dirty. Many places like the bathrooms,
laundry area, dry area, bedroom, storeroom all these places are likely to be attacked by your untrained
dog.
2. Set proper food timing for your dog. Make sure you never feed it late in the
evenings. After you are off to sleep, your dog might relieve and surprise you with the mess in the morning.
Your dog needs to be under a good watch when it undergoes housetraining.
3. Every dog has a different way of expressing its feelings. If your dog is trying
to tell you something that it needs, observe all these signs. Some dogs for example scratch the door or floor
when it wants to get out; some come to you and run to the door to and fro several times so that you
understand it wants to go out. Try to identify your dog’s style of communication and house training older dog
will be easier than expected.
4. When you take your dog outside for elimination, try to take your dog to the same
place every day. Your dog will gradually only eliminate there as that will be considered the place to
eliminate. It will save a lot of your time in the long run as your dog will immediately eliminate in that
particular area and finish its business quickly.
5. Try to come up with a particular word you want to use to let your dog eliminate.
That should be your command every time you take your dog out, you should use the same word to ask it to
eliminate quickly. House training older dog will be much easier with the help of this command
word.
6. Try your best to keep your cool all the time when house training older dog.
Never scold it or beat it, the punishment will only make your job difficult and the learning process will be
a waste of time.
Perhaps the best way to retrain this older dog and a way I have used to great success is to
invest in a crate of the correct size for your dog. At first when you put an older dog in their crate they
will often whine or bark quite a lot at first but, persevere and persuade your new canine friend that this is
their home. The biggest majority of dogs will not soil their own living and sleep area, this crate will
become their own and they will try to look after it.
Your dog has to realize that you have your own space and they have theirs, when the dog
realizes that this is their own and it contains food, water, toys rewards and a warm blanket they will
quickly come to love this crate. I have one dog that cannot wait to go into her crate after walks or some
other activity. In fact we simply leave the door open and she now goes in and out as she
wishes.
I firmly believe the best way to house training older dog is to get a crate, it is not cruel
at all but, simply a great way to start retraining an older dog. Many re-homed adult dogs have lots of bad
habits or behavioral problems but with time and patience any problems can be overcome.
