Dog Housebreaking
Dogs by nature are said to be very clean animals and
they always like to keep their crate and eating bowl clean. Dogs if not trained properly will eliminate in a
particular place they feel comfortable.
This area might be inside your house or outside.
Hence, dog housebreaking is a must for all pet dogs. Dogs if you observe do not like to step into water or wet
areas, and hence they prefer eliminating in dry areas, you should use these natural instincts to teach your dog
housebreaking.
When you have a pup try to take your pup out more
often, pups if kept waiting might have accidents and these might develop into habits and as your pup grows it
gets difficult to teach your dog housebreaking. Patience is the key to dog housebreaking; you will have to spend
a good amount of time training your dog. Adult dogs eliminate about 2 to 3 times a day, however a pup will like
to eliminate over 6 to 7 times a day. As the pup grows this habit reduces to just about 3 times a day and you
should be able to tell your dog when and where to eliminate. Your dog should be able to obey your
orders.
To train your dog housebreaking you must be able to
first understand your dogs signs when it wants to eliminate. Most dogs run up and down towards the door and you,
some try to indicate it by whining and barking loudly, some try to scratch the mats and floor and sniff all
around the house. You should be able to tell what sign your dog makes to help you understand it needs to
eliminate. Pups if kept with their mothers will learn it from them to eliminate outside, but most dogs have to
be trained by their owners.
Wet rainy days can be difficult for your dog as some
dogs don’t like to go out in the wet. You can either train your dog to eliminate in the toilet or take your dog
out under some shed, and it isn’t raining.
It is always advisable to train your dog as soon as
you own it. Pups if have lived with their mothers they will be trained where to eliminate, but otherwise you
have to train your dog housebreaking. Never lose your temper if your dog has an accident of eliminates in the
wrong place. Your dog should be able to understand what is correct and your bad temper will only scare it more
and thus will take more time to train it to housebreak.
Training a dog is an art and owners should use
special words to command your dog. If you appreciate and like what your dog has done say nice things to it and
use it often when it has done something good. On the contrary some command words should also be used to scold
your dog. Make sure in the same fashion use a command word for your dog to eliminate and do not use this word
for any other purpose. Your dog will learn the command word and will obey your orders immediately. This command
word will help you take your dog in bad weather conditions out and also bring it back into the house quickly. It
also helps your dog eliminate in any new surrounding with the help of your command word. Whenever, your dog
eliminates use the command word to ensure your dog is listening to your command when it is doing its
business.
Always ensure your dog has eliminated well, so that
when you bring it back inside the house, it doesn’t need to eliminate again. This can be tiring in the
beginning, but once your dog learns your command it will never disappoint you.
Dog housebreaking needs your presence of mind and
understanding your dog well. If your dog has as accident, once you clean up the place make sure you keep the
dirty rag outside, where you want your dog to poop the next time. The smell will prompt it to poop outside the
house or where you have left the rag.
Your dog should also be able to adapt itself with
other members of the family. Try to send it out to eliminate with other members as well. Otherwise only you will
end up taking it and it might get difficult when you are tied up with work or are not around.
Your dog should be able to obey your orders out of love and not out of
fear. Once the dog respects you and loves you it will automatically obey your orders religiously and you will
find training it is so much easier and fun too. Go with your dog out for walks and let your dog out only once
you know it will do its business out and then come home after eliminating. Most dogs need good training to
become well trained. Dog housebreaking is also done with time and patience. Praise your dog often when you
find it doing the right thing and your dog will love it.
